Sherman C. Toppin is an experienced Attorney and Real Estate Broker. He operates a law firm and real estate brokerage with locations in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Toppin’s law practice involves all variety of real estate matters, estate and probate matters, civil litigation, and receivership. The matters he represents range from simple residential closings to complex commercial deals.
As the broker/owner of a real estate company, he employs a team of agents that assists consumers with buying and selling homes. His brokerage also manages rental units and apartment buildings for both private and corporate owners.
Mr. Toppin is frequently appointed as a Receiver in mortgage foreclosure matters involving multi-unit buildings, commercial properties and portfolios of residential properties. Institutional lenders, private local banks and equity funds hire Toppin to manage assets pending foreclosure which may eventually arrive in their real estate owned (REO) departments. His law firm accepts receivership appointments in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Toppin has taught continuing educations courses in receivership and is regarded as an authority in this area of law.
In academia, Toppin is frequently engaged as an instructor, presenter or trainer of various real estate subjects. Toppin is currently a member of the Adjunct Faculty at Temple University Real Estate Institute, where he teaches Real Estate Law and licensure course for Broker and agents. Previously, Toppin taught Business Law at Strayer University. Toppin is a regular Faculty presenter with the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, where he has presented a variety of CLE subjects over the years.
A native of the District of Columbia, Toppin earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia, and received his Juris Doctor from the College of William & Mary School of Law. He is admitted to the bars of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia, and can represent clients in both state and federal courts in these jurisdictions.
Mr. Toppin has a proven record of non-profit and government related community service work. In 2010, he was an appointed member of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Committee for Judicial Selection and Retention. In 2011, he was a Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia Zoning Code Commission. Also, from 2010-2012, he served as a member of the Trustee board at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church. Toppin believes in devoting his expertise and time towards worthy causes and organizations that help people in need.
In the media, Toppin has appeared on episodes of HGTV’s show “Bang for your Buck” as a Real Estate Expert, providing property valuation data and marketing expertise. Toppin is often invited by local radio personalities to speak on real estate issues and forecast market trends.
In 2010, Toppin was elected the 60th President of the Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia, an affiliate organization of the National Bar Association, by practicing attorneys in the region.
Recently, Mr. Toppin has authored a book titled, Finishing on Top, a motivational writing to help people achieve their personal best through the power of finishing.
